She attended Harvard University, where she studied film and specialized in documentary filmmaking.

Joy Reid grew up in Denver, Colorado alongside her brother, Oren Lomena, and sister, June Carryl. At the age of 17, she returned to Flatbush, Brooklyn after the passing of her mother from breast cancer.

Career Path

In the early to mid-1990s, Joy Reid was employed at a business consulting firm in New York. In 1997, she relocated to South Florida to pursue a career in journalism. She began her foray into news reporting by joining the morning show team at WSVN Channel 7.

In 2003, Joy Reid ended her career as a journalist and joined America Coming Together, a progressive political action group. The organization’s focus was opposing the Iraq War, which had been declared by President George W. Bush.

After a three-year period, Reid departed from the group to become the co-host of Wake Up South Florida, where she hosted a morning radio talk show on WTPS for one year.

While in Miami, she concurrently held positions as a political columnist for the Miami Herald from 2003 to 2015 and as editor of The Reid Report from 2000 to 2014.

In 2008, Reid joined Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.


From 2014 to 2015, Joy Reid served as the host of a cable news program, The Reid Report, on MSNBC during the afternoon hours.

Following its discontinuation in 2015, she transitioned to a national correspondent position at MSNBC. In 2016, she began hosting a political talk show titled AM Joy on weekends for MSNBC.

Joy Reid became a frequent replacement for other hosts on the network, notably serving as the host of The Rachel Maddow Show.

The ReidOut

In 2020, Reid’s dream came true when she became the host of her own show, “The ReidOut.” The show focuses on current events, social justice, and political discussions. Her role as the show’s anchor made her the first black woman to hold a primetime position on cable television.
