Former professional football player Joey Barton was found guilty of attacking his wife, Georgia Barton, following a domestic altercation at their family home in Kew, southwest London, in June 2021. After a two-day trial at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, the 42-year-old, known for his tenure with teams including Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers, —found guilty of assault by beating.
The court heard that during a drunken altercation, Joey Barton pushed his wife to the floor and kicked her in the head, resulting in a lump on her forehead and a bleeding nose. The incident occurred after the couple drank with friends while their children slept upstairs. After a heated disagreement, Joey Barton threatened to approach his wife’s brother and father.

Mrs. Barton first withdrew her claims, stating the injuries were unintentional, but the court continued the trial. Emphasising the loss of trust in the home environment, Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring discounted Barton’s story as “vague”.
Joey Barton was sentenced to a 12-week prison term, suspended for two years, so he will not serve time unless he breaks another rule during this period. He was also directed to pay £2,183 in victim surcharge and prosecution expenses. This conviction adds to Barton’s past of legal troubles. He spent six months in prison in 2008 for assault and affray connected to an incident in Liverpool city centre.

He was sentenced to four months’ suspended sentence for attacking former colleague Ousmane Dabo during a training session same year. Joey Barton voiced dismay and said he intended to appeal the ruling. The pair stays married and keeps sharing a home.
