A huge fire at an electricity substation near London’s Heathrow Airport caused a shutdown that has never happened before. This has messed up travel around the world and affected hundreds of thousands of people. The fire started late Thursday night at the North Hyde Electricity Substation in Hayes, West London. It knocked out a lot of power, so Heathrow had to close until Friday at midnight.
Ten fire trucks and about 70 workers from the London Fire Brigade were sent to put out the fire, which sent huge flames and thick smoke into the air. About 150 people had to leave their homes close for safety reasons. Over 16,300 homes and companies in the area lost power because of the fire. It was planned that there would be at least 1,350 planes at Heathrow Airport on Friday. This airport is one of the busiest worldwide for international travel.

Many incoming flights had to be rerouted to other airports, like Gatwick, Paris Charles de Gaulle, and Shannon in Ireland, because of the sudden closing, which caused a lot of chaos. Some long-haul planes from the US had to turn around and go back to where they started in the middle of their journey. When Heathrow shut down, it had an effect on airports all over the world. Several planes for Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways had to be cancelled or rerouted.
People all over the world had their flights cancelled or delayed, and companies were rushing to help those who were affected. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband called the fire a “catastrophic event” and said it had also shut down a backup engine that the airport was using. Officials at Heathrow said that the closure was needed to keep customers and staff safe. They told travellers to stay away from the airport and call their airlines for more information.
