Renowned actor Gene Hackman and his wife, classical musician Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their Santa Fe, New Mexico home along with their dog on Wednesday afternoon, February 26, 2025. Although the specific cause of death is currently unknown, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza verified the discovery and said that no foul play is suspected.
Born Eugene Allen Hackman on January 30, 1930, in San Bernardino, California, Gene Hackman had a fleeting childhood before calling Danville, Illinois home. Lying about his age, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and worked as a field radio operator in China, Japan, and Hawaii from 1947 to 1952.
After his military duty, Hackman studied journalism and television production at the University of Illinois but quickly turned his attention to acting. He signed up for the Pasadena Playhouse in California, where he befriended fellow actor Dustin Hoffman for a lifetime.

Playing Buck Barrow in “Bonnie and Clyde” (1967), Hackman’s breakthrough came in getting his first Academy Award nod for Best Supporting Actor. Through his Oscar-winning portrayal as Detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in “The French Connection” (1971), he confirmed his reputation as a leading man.
His performance of nuanced characters carried on in prominent parts in “The Poseidon Adventure” (1972), “The Conversation” (1974), and as the venerable villain Lex Luthor in “Superman” (1978) and its successors.
Gene Hackman gave praised performances in films like “Unforgotten” (1992), for which he received a second Oscar, “The Firm” (1993), and “Crimson Tide” (1995). With humorous parts in “The Birdcage” (1996) and “The Royal Tenenbaums” (2001), he proved his adaptability.
Following his performance in “Welcome to Mooseport” (2004), Hackman retired from acting after a career spanning more than eighty films and over four decades. He subsequently moved to writing, co-authoring several books with underwater archaeologist Daniel Lenihan.
From 1956 to 1986, Gene Hackman was married to Faye Maltese; he had three children with her: Christopher, Elizabeth, and Leslie. He wed Betsy Arakawa in 1991; the pair lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Beyond performance, Hackman led a life full of many passions including painting, fishing, and writing.
