From Idea to Release A Developer Guide to Game Production
Game Production

The game development process is a collaborative method to make your video game ideas into reality.

It is a combination of diverse talent, time, and teamwork that delivers the final product that players love. There is also the matter of cutting-edge technology that is used.

Game engines make it far easier for developers to create game assets. Unity is the most employed game engine with a usage rate of 61%. Newer technologies like AR/VR are rapidly growing and entering mainstream usage, with the market value at $20.73 billion in 2022.

There is the blockchain technology, wearable gaming, generative AI, etc that are ready to become integral to the game development process.

In this blog piece, we take you through the game production process, from concept to launch. We showcase the main phases of the procedure and the people, tools, and strategies that are needed for completing them successfully.

1. Pre-production Phase

This stage lays the foundation for the rest of the process. It gives a tangible shape to the abstract ideas that game developers start the process with. Here are a few of its in-steps:

  1. Concept and Design: It is the idea that puts the gears in motion. The requirement is to convey this idea well to stakeholders. The concept is transformed into a game design document (GDD) that showcases the core gameplay, story, characters, and overall vision.
  2. Team Building: As mentioned earlier, this is a collaborative process, and you must choose the right people for the team. The members include experts that are game designers, VR game developers, artists, programmers, sound engineers, and also writers, producers, and marketing specialists.
  3. Prototyping and Iteration: Rough models of the game concepts allow the devs to validate their ideas, test core mechanics and gather feedback. This feedback is necessary to iteratively improve their vision.

2. Production Phase

This is generally the longest phase in game production. The game assets like characters, game environment, levels, and more are created in this stage.

  1. Art and Asset Creation: technical artists like 3D modelers create the visual game assets such as characters, objects, landscapes, etc.
  2. Sound Design: The soundscape is equally as important to the visuals in creating an immersive experience. Elements like sound effects, ambient music, and character voices bring the pixels to life.
  3. Level Design: Each level is crafted to challenge the player and motivate them to keep going as well. The environments, challenges, and pacing of the game come into play in this step.
  4. Programming and Implementation: Not only do the programmers write the game’s code, they also implement the game mechanics, AI behavior, physics simulations, and other technical aspects of the gameplay.

3. Post-Production

This is the phase to polish the developed game and get it ready for launch.

  1. Quality Assurance (QA): A QA team diligently tests the game to find any bugs, glitches, and inconsistencies and resolve them. This ensures that the final delivered game is stable, playable, and meets quality standards.
  2. Optimization: In this step, the developers ensure that the game runs smoothly across all devices and platforms.
  3. Localization: For an international release, it is necessary that the game development company tailors the game to the language and culture of a specific region.

4. Launch and Post-launch Support

  1. Marketing and Promotion: You must create a hype for the game. Get people excited. This is done via use of engaging trailers, demos, social media engagement, and collaborations with influencers.
  1. Distribution Platforms: There are several platforms on which you can release your game. These include PC platforms (Steam, Epic Games Store), consoles (PlayStation, Xbox, Switch), or mobile app stores. Choosing the right platform is critical to the game’s success.
  2. Community Building: Use social media, live events, and online forums to directly engage with the gaming community/your target players. This will create a loyal fanbase for your game and give you feedback on your work.
  3. Updates and Patches: Once the game is launched, players need continuous support for any new issues they come across. Moreover, it is important to keep the gameplay fresh by releasing updates and patches.
