Under the effect of cocaine, actress Amanda Mealing—known for her performances in “Casualty” and “Holby City—was in a major vehicle accident in January 2025. Her Mini Cooper skidded across the road and crashed with a Skoda driven by theatre nurse and district councillor Mark Le Sage, who was en route to work, at about 10:14 AM on the A1175 in Stamford, Lincolnshire.
Amanda Mealing, 57, sustained injuries including a cut to the head, a broken wrist, and a fractured clavicle. Le Sage suffered serious injuries that severely affected his fine motor skills, rendering him unable to continue his profession as a theatre nurse. He also experienced ongoing issues with sight and hearing, and constant pain in various parts of his body. He was forced to cease activities such as playing water polo and performing as a keyboard player in his local band, Zebra.
Subsequent tests revealed that Amanda Mealing had 18 micrograms of cocaine per litre of blood, exceeding the legal limit of 10 micrograms. Additionally, she had 240 micrograms of benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, per litre of blood, nearly five times over the legal limit of 50 micrograms.
Appearing in court under her married name, Amanda Sainsbury, she pleaded guilty to driving with cocaine in her system and driving without due care and attention. The court imposed a 22-month driving ban and a fine ttotalling£485.
During the proceedings, it was disclosed that Amanda Mealing had been visiting a friend the night before the crash, where she consumed cocaine and stayed overnight. She was driving home the following morning when the accident occurred. Paramedics at the scene suspected she was experiencing a hypoglycaemic attack due to alarmingly low blood glucose levels, which could have contributed to the crash. Her solicitor, Edward Lloyd, stated that she was deeply ashamed of her actions, especially considering her brother’s death from a drug overdose at the age of 18.
