A1 Crash in Newcastle Involving Police Vehicles Leaves Five Hospitalized​

In the early hours of Wednesday, April 9, 2025, a serious multi-vehicle collision occurred on the A1 northbound near junction 75 and the Denton Burn roundabout in Newcastle. Shortly around 2:30 AM BST, the collision involved at least four police cars and a private automobile. Five people with severe injuries were sent to the hospital after a quick response from emergency services.

Pictures from the incident show significant damage to the involved cars, including a black 4×4 tipped on its side with trash all over the road. One police car suffered considerable damage; its roof was ripped off. The incident caused the A1 to be closed in both directions between junctions 75 (Denton) and 73 (Swalwell), therefore causing significant morning traffic delays.

National Highways said that the closure will probably stay in place until the afternoon to enable the Forensic Collision Investigation Unit of Northumbria Police to conduct an extensive inquiry.

Drivers were encouraged to look for other paths because the closure seriously congested the surrounding A19 and neighbouring roads. Newcastle Airport also advised passengers to allow their travel time to increase because of the disturbance. Investigating the events surrounding the crash is still in progress.

Police cars’ participation calls for the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to investigate separately. Authorities have put temporary traffic restrictions and are keeping the situation under control. Drivers are advised to change their paths in line with traffic recommendations and be informed about them.
