After a year off, the Golden Globe Awards, a major night in the entertainment world, are finally back. The 80th annual Golden Globe Awards was a night of celebration and redemption for many in the entertainment industry. “House of the Dragon” and “Abbott Elementary” took home the top prizes for best TV drama and best TV comedy, respectively. The Banshees of Inisherin” scored big, taking home the best motion picture musical or comedy award, while “The Fabelmans” nabbed best movie drama. The event, which lasted over three hours, was held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and marked the show’s return after being forced off the air in 2022 due to a series of controversies. In this article, we will highlight some of the key moments and the Golden Globe Winners in 2023.

The 80th annual Golden Globe Awards: What Made Them Unique?

On January 10, 2023, Hollywood came together for the 80th annual Golden Globe Awards to honor the year’s top film and television achievements. The live-streamed awards show came from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California at 8 pm ET on NBC and Peacock in the US.

Jerrod Carmichael, a comedian, and actor renowned for his controversial and irreverent approach presented the awards presentation. Carmichael didn’t waste any time responding to the backlash over the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s (HFPA) lack of diversity, criticizing the HFPA for accepting Black members only after George Floyd’s death and expressing doubt about the sincerity of the HFPA’s attempts to improve.

He continued to make fresh commentary throughout the night, even referencing the awards that Tom Cruise returned last year. With his sharp wit and timely jokes, Carmichael brought much-needed energy to the awards show.

Second, Another notable aspect of the 2023 Golden Globe Awards was the presence of several A-list stars, including Jennifer Coolidge, and Regina Hall. However, it was Kevin Costner’s absence that garnered attention, with his Yellowstone co-star Regina Hall jokingly expressing skepticism about his supposed need to “shelter in place” in Santa Barbara.

Third, Colin Farrell won the Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy award for his role in “The Banshees of Inisherin”, and he made a witty remark to the piano player who started playing as he was being ushered offstage. Michelle Yeoh, who won the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy award, also had a funny interaction with the piano player. While she told him to “shut up,” she also made a poignant speech about her 40 years in the industry and how she wasn’t going to let go of her award.

Golden Globe Winners – Special Awards

Many specialized awards were given out during the 80th Golden Globes to honor the achievements of certain individuals or groups within the entertainment business. There were various recipients of Golden Globes that year for their contributions to the cinema and television industries. Special awards presented during the presentation included the following.

Every year, the Cecil B. DeMille Award is given out to recognize someone’s amazing contributions to the entertainment biz! Eddie Murphy was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award in recognition of his many achievements in the film business.

The annual Carol Burnett Award recognizes a person for outstanding service to the television business. The 2023 Golden Globes included Ryan Murphy’s touching tribute to Michaela Jaé Rodriguez. Rodriguez, who made history as the first trans actress to win a Golden Globe last year, was unfortunately unable to make it to the live broadcast event. So, Murphy took advantage of his position to give Rodriguez the ovation she deserved when he received the Carol Burnett Award for his services to television.

At that, he motioned for Rodriguez to rise to her feet in the crowd, and the whole place exploded into cheers in honor of her groundbreaking work. It was a moving tribute to the entertainment industry’s commitment to diversity and acceptance.

Standout Golden Globe Winners

The 2023 Golden Globes saw a diverse group of winners, recognizing the talent and achievements of the entertainment industry. One of the standout winners of the night was Steven Spielberg, who took home the Best Director award for his film “The Fabelmans.” In his heartfelt acceptance speech, Spielberg paid tribute to his late mother, who he imagined would be proud of his win.

Austin Butler was also a winner for his role as Elvis Presley in “Elvis,” and backstage, he joked about how he hasn’t been able to stop talking like Elvis since filming the movie. Other winners included Colin Farrell for his performance in “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Michelle Yeoh for her role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, who won the Best Supporting Actress in a TV series award for her performance in “Pose.”

In addition to the individual awards, two-lifetime achievement awards were presented to Eddie Murphy and Ryan Murphy, recognizing their contributions to the entertainment industry.

Despite the absence of some winners, such as Cate Blanchett, Zendaya, and Kevin Costner, who were unable to attend the ceremony due to work commitments, the night was a celebration of talent, diversity, and progress in the industry. With reforms being implemented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the future of the Golden Globes remains uncertain, but this year’s ceremony was certainly a memorable one.
